On Friday 5th February, over 400 players and spectators rocked up to the KIKOFF Soccer Centre in Marrickville to participate in the music industry’s annual charity 5-a-side football tournament, Musica Copa.
With excitement levels at an all-time high, pitch side speculation quickly spread as a number of newly elected teams were making a strong claim for the title after impressive group stage victories. The Sweat It Out x Maker Agency team set out to win an unprecedented hat trick of tournament victories but fell short in the knock out rounds. In the most closely contested final ever, the projects* snatched victory from Lucky Ent. in a dramatic final 90 seconds, overturning a 1-2 score into a 3-2 championship winning grand final victory. Wild celebrations ensued and a cheque for $7000 was presented to the team and their nominated charity Project Future. Runner up Lucky Ent. walked away with a cheque for $5000 for their charity The Reach Foundation and MTV claimed 3rd Place for the second year in a row, beating an improved Audiopaxx team in the 3rd/4th play off and winning $2000 for Ted Noff’s Foundation.
Thanks to team registrations, sponsorship and VIP door donations this year’s footy fundraiser generated an unbelievable $16,500 for charity. The remaining $2500 will be divided equally between the other quarter finalists, with Audiopaxx, UNDR Ctrl, Universal Music, Ministry of Sound x Mustard Music and Sweat It Out x Maker Agency each receiving $500 for their charities.
The star names were again out in force to add a slice of celebrity over proceedings. Fresh from claiming the #1 spot on triple j’s Hottest 100, Scott Baldwin of The Rubens played for the new WME team, Flight Facilites’ Hugo Gruzman turned out for Future Classic, the DMAs’ Johnny Took was repping hard for Falcona and Musica Copa’s unofficial ambassadors The Meeting Tree returned to kick some goals for Sony Music.
Fellow artists Just A Gent, Charles Murdoch, Montaigne, Olympic Ayres, World Champion, KUGA, Motorik, GG Magree, Surfdisco, Third Floor and Gordi were also spotted on the pitch alongside heaps of key movers n’ shakers from the wider music community, and plenty more watching from the sidelines. Long-standing local community station FBi Radio curated the music for the day, hosted by their digital station FBi Click and powered by VOID acoustics. DJs Ribongia, Adi Toohey, Luen, Kato, Sports, Nes, Andy Garvey and Sandro Switch keep the BPM’s pumping, whilst TV hunk Scott Tweedie returned as Musica Copa’s official MC. The brand new Beer & Burger Bar hosted by Young Henrys and Mary’s was also a major hit with attendees!
Special thanks must go to all the amazing partners involved in Musica Copa, without whom the event wouldn’t be possible. Shout out’s to FBI Radio, HOBO, Jack Daniel’s, Mary’s, Moshtix, KIKOFF, Nike, Purple Sneakers, Red Bull Music Academy, Recovery Water, Smirnoff, UNDR Ctrl, VOID and Young Henrys.
